Social-Learning
This weeks resources had many uses of technology and strategies that are applications of the Social-learning theory. One of these strategies discussed is the use of the creation of multimedia. In the example the students, in groups, had to create their own movies about a famous mathematicians. The students then had to take notes on the other groups movies. This is an example of social-learning because the students are working together to construct the common knowledge. A second example of social-learning came in web collaboratives. In the example JASON allowed students to collaborative look up information. They can actually ask an expert in that field to answer their question. This is an example of social-learning because the students are working together to construct common knowledge.

Thomas,
ReplyDeleteI like how you restated the point that you can use social learning to "ask the expert." I think often social learning is too often thought of as student to student learning, whereas we now have an excellent line of communication in which we can actually contact experts.
Just a few weeks ago, I had my photography students to a PowerPoint presentation in which they were going to teach the class about a famous photographer. One of my students asked me if it would be okay to email "his" photographer. I told him it was fine, but to not be surprised if this person didn't respond due to the fact that they were probably either busy or out shooting in the field (nature photographer), or were overwhelmed with emails already. To our surprise, the photographer responded to his questions within three days. Both the student and I were very excited that this professional photographer took time to respond to the student's interview questions. There is no doubt that the Internet provides a great social learning resource.

Social learning is a way of life. Students learn from example of their peers, parents, teacher and celebrities. It is our job to relate the information and allow for students to respond and retain that information.
